Chickadees live in hollow trees and stumps, carefully decorating and renovating, and don’t care to nest in a nesting box or birdhouse, unless you fill it with sawdust and let them remove that, as if they were clearing out a hollow log. They are omniverous, eating grubs and insects as well as seeds – they often appreciate some suet at a feeder in wintery climates. Tough and adaptable, the chickadee has almost no body fat but can survive bitter cold Canadian winters outdoors, when temperatures can plunge to – and more … they have the unique ability to lower their body temperature dramatically and thus require less heat. Basically, during cold spells they almost die every night! How amazing is that? During the day they’re constantly active, as they need a lot to eat.
